Home Tech Problem Finder
Not sure what's wrong or who to call? Choose your device and symptom and we'll walk you through safe first steps and the right next move.
Choose the device that's giving you trouble. Each section covers common symptoms, a couple of safe first steps you can try yourself, and which service to book if the problem doesn't clear up.
Computer
It's running slow or freezing
Safe first steps:
- Restart the computer completely — this alone fixes a surprising number of slowdowns.
- Close browser tabs and programs you aren't using.
- Check how much free storage space is left; a nearly-full drive causes slowdowns.
If it's still slow after a restart, or the computer is more than five years old and struggling, book Everyday Tech Help and we'll take a proper look.
It won't turn on
Safe first steps:
- Confirm it's plugged in and the outlet works (try a lamp in the same outlet).
- Hold the power button for 10 seconds, then try again.
- If it's a laptop, try plugging in the charger for 15 minutes before powering on — the battery may be fully drained.
Still nothing? Book Everyday Tech Help so we can diagnose it in person.

Apps keep crashing or it feels sluggish
Safe first steps:
- Restart the device — press and hold the power button for the restart option.
- Check for pending software updates in Settings.
- Close apps you aren't using that are running in the background.

It shows 'offline' or won't print

Wi-Fi or Internet
Internet is slow, or keeps dropping
Work through the decision tree in our Home Wi-Fi Help Center to figure out whether it's your equipment, your provider, or coverage in your home. If it needs a hands-on fix, book Wi-Fi Help.
TV or Streaming
Buffering, remote trouble, or can't sign in to an app
Our Smart TV & Streaming Help Center has a full decision tree for this. If you'd rather skip straight to a visit, book TV & Streaming Help.
Smart Home Devices
Alexa, Google Home, smart plugs, cameras or doorbells won't connect
Safe first steps:
- Confirm the device has power and its light is blinking in the pattern the manual describes for setup mode.
- Move it closer to your router temporarily while pairing.
- Make sure your phone's app is fully updated before pairing.
Still stuck? Book Smart Home Help. Note: this doesn't include electrical work or extensive hardwired installation.
