Printer Troubleshooting Center
Printer offline, out of ink, or refusing to connect? Work through the right checklist for what's actually happening.
Open whichever matches what's happening with your printer.
Printer shows 'offline'
- Restart the printer: turn it off, wait 15 seconds, turn it back on.
- Restart your router if the printer connects over Wi-Fi.
- On your computer, open your printer settings and check the printer isn't set to "use offline mode" or "pause printing."
- Confirm the printer's Wi-Fi light is solid, not blinking — a blinking light usually means it lost its network connection.
Still showing offline after this? Book Printer Help.
Nothing happens when I hit print
- Check for a paused or stuck print job in your computer's print queue and cancel it, then try again.
- Confirm the printer has paper and isn't showing an error light.
- Try printing a simple test page instead of the original document — this tells you if the problem is the printer connection or the specific file.
- Restart both the printer and the computer.
Setting up a new printer on Wi-Fi
Most printers have a small screen or button sequence to join Wi-Fi directly — check the printer's setup menu. Once it's on the network, install the printer software on each computer or add it in your phone's printer settings. If your printer doesn't have its own screen, some models need a temporary USB connection to a computer for the very first setup step. This is exactly what we handle during a Printer Help visit if you'd rather not sort through the manual.
Print quality looks streaky, faded, or wrong colors
- Run the built-in cleaning or alignment tool from the printer's menu or software — most brands include one.
- Confirm ink or toner levels aren't critically low.
- For inkjet printers that sit unused for weeks, dried ink in the print head is a common cause; the cleaning cycle above usually resolves it.
Setting up scanning
Most all-in-one printers can scan to a computer, email, or a folder, but the setup steps vary a lot by brand. We're glad to set this up during any printer visit.
Should I repair or replace an older printer?
As a rough guide: if a basic inkjet or laser printer is having repeated hardware issues (paper jams on every print, hardware error codes, or is more than 6-8 years old) and a new comparable model costs less than $80-120, replacement is often more practical than repeated repair visits. If it's a single fixable issue like a Wi-Fi or software setting, a repair visit is usually the better value. We'll give you an honest opinion either way.
